The Betty McLaughlin Memorial Butterfly Garden recognizes the lifetime contribution Mrs. McLaughlin made to the Deer Park/Barrington area. Her thoughts on design and plant selection are the foundation of today's garden . It is located on the original site of the farmhouse vegetable garden. Its dimensions are approximately fifty feet by sixty feet.
As an outdoor education area for children and adults, our goal is for the garden to be the highest quality butterfly garden in Lake County. You will find many native species, annuals, vines and perennials that you can grow in your own garden to attract both butterflies and hummingbirds. There is a children's section of the garden that provides children the opportunity to experience the different plants' textures and fragrances. The months of June, July and August are best for viewing the garden.
Many donations have helped make the garden as beautiful as it is. A cedar fence donated by the Little Garden Club of Barrington encloses the garden. Donated pavers edge the fence. The Little Garden Club of Barrington has also donated a memorial cedar bench and funds to make the garden handicap accessible. And a private donor contributed the crushed brown granite that tops the garden path.
Come, visit the Betty McLaughlin Butterfly Garden. Its beauty is for all to see and enjoy. If you are interested in gardening and would like to volunteer some time, please contact the Foundation.
