A burn is a very important part of having a healthy prairie. Usually nature does the burning with lightning striking the prairie, but now-a-days, man burns the prairie. Prairie burns helps to release the nutrients that aids in the growing process of the grasses, forbs, and seeds. Some seeds will only open if heated in a burn. The burn also cleanses the prairie of weeds and invasives. If prairie's didn't have periodic burns, the prairie would become a scrub forest filled with cedars, buckthorn, wild rose, wild grape, and other invasives.
