Bird Field Trip at Vehe Farm

November 12 2008 - St. Anne's Brownie Troop 895 attended Vehe Farm to learn about birds. The Vehe Farm Foundation led a bird walk by the wetlands where many Canadian geese were seen feeding, preening, and socializing. A special treat was when a Red-Tailed Hawk flew over the wetlands attempting to catch a woodpecker and caused the geese to take flight. Over 50 geese flew overhead to the delight of the girls. Nests were also viewed in the bare trees when walking the prairie paths along with grackles and sparrows flying overhead. Inside activities included using the IDNR educational bird trunk, touching bird feathers, eggs, owl pellet, listening to bird calls, and viewing bird nests collected by the Foundation. The field trip ended with a nature based craft activity for the girls to remember their visit to Vehe Farm. Schedule your Scout outing by calling (847) 331-0967 or by email at info@vehefarmfoundation.org.
